The new formula doesn’t work, May 26, 2015

The previous formula of Azo Yeast included boneset 5X and mistletoe leaf 5X, in a probiotic base (bacillus coagulans) and other “inactive” ingredients. I found that formula worked well for me. I have PCOS and get mild yeast infections regularly, and used Azo once a day to control symptoms. It was a standby and I loved it.

Boneset and mistletoe both have lengthy histories of being used as natural medications (the former for fever, the latter for hypertension) but I’m not sure they were the reason the old Azo Yeast worked. I suspect what really helped was the probiotic base of bacillus coagulans, which has been reported as being beneficial to vaginal flora (see the Wikipedia article on bacillus coagulans for links to some medical studies on this).

The new formula doesn’t do anything for me, I’m afraid. The new ingredients are Candida albicans 30X, Kreosotum 30X, Natrum muriaticum 12X, and Sulphur 12X, with no more probiotic base.

I was a bit taken aback by C. albicans, considering that’s fungus and is often what CAUSES a yeast infection. I assumed that Azo was now a proponent of the “like cures like” version of homeopathy, i.e. you take teeny tiny amounts of something that would cause the symptoms you are having, and that in itself cures those symptoms. My emails to them about this confirmed my suspicions. Their words from the email: “homeopathy can be explained as ‘let likes be cured by likes’ … As such, a small amount of Candida albicans is included in the formulation to help relieve symptoms of vaginal itching, burning and occasional discharge.”

There are two problems with this: First, the prior formula included nothing that would “let likes be cured by likes,” yet it was still considered homeopathic by the company. Obviously, they have changed, but their emails to me seemed to indicate they didn’t want to even admit they had changed the formulation, but acted a bit put out that I would even bother to ask them about the inclusion of C. albicans. I’m sure many of their customers are knowledgeable in homeopathy but this is a product available in drug stores and groceries across the country, and a lot of us have just picked it up, hoping it will work. When it does, we keep taking it; we don’t care if it’s homeopathic or not.

Second, something that was in the original formulation WORKED, whether it was the boneset or the mistletoe or the bacillus coagulans. It’s gone now, and these pills don’t work at all.

Of the ingredients included in this new formula, I’m at a loss as to why some were included. Sulphur is for skin conditions — it produces burns when applied in large amounts, so small “homeopathic” amounts are said to cure that burning, so I understand why it was included in a homeopathic cure. But Kreosotum is used for menstrual spotting, and natrum muriaticum is said to regulate water retention and is also used for pregnancy and postpartum issues. Neither seem to have any homeopathic use regarding yeast infections.

I’m probably more of a natural medicine kind of person than a homeopathic person, but I obviously won’t refuse to try something that is homeopathic. My negative review isn’t because of an anti-homeopathy bias. I WANT this to work. I WANT to have an easily-available pill I can take to help manage symptoms. Sadly, this just doesn’t work. I can’t recommend it.

Had thrush continually on tongue, RX lozenges didn’t help. Had to aggressively scrape daily. Took one pill at night the last 3 nights and my tongue is free and clear. Amazing
