A Great Multivitamin Sadly Priced Too High after a Private Equity Buyout — A Good, Far Less Expensive Alternative Exists Though, June 16, 2017

Rainbow Light’s (RL) products have consistently been ranked among the best multivitamins by various reputable online review sites such as LabDoor thanks to excellent quality control and high quality ingredients. Indeed, it received numerous industry awards as the top brand among “natural” vitamin/supplement manufacturers. Unlike other brands, RL uses high bioavailability/amino acid chelated minerals rather than cheaper inorganic versions at 100%+ of the RDA — all in a single tablet. Many other brands offer multivitamins with organic mineral formulations at a similar price point, (e.g. NOW Foods, TwinLab and Opti), but after adjusting for serving size or RDA percentages per tablet these alternatives were at least 50% more expensive until just a few months ago. At ~$22/150 tablets + tax, (a modest but reasonable premium for a premium formulation), LabDoor ranked RL Men’s One as its “Best Value” among nearly six dozen other multivitamin brands reviewed including much cheaper, inorganic formulations such as those from Centrum, Walmart/Equate and Costco/Kirkland. (Google “LabDoor multivitamin” for this ranking.)

Sadly, one can no longer consider RL’s multivitamin a “best value” following a 70% price hike at the end of 2016. This price increase likely reflects the company’s acquisition by WellNext LLC, owned by WM Partners LP, a private equity firm founded in 2015 by Harvard MBA financial types. These “wizards” apparently seek to maximize profits in the short term with little concern about the company’s customers and the brand’s long term prospects. No doubt they are counting on customer loyalty or laziness to maintain revenues at the higher price. The profit boost supports a higher net margin and valuation when the company is flipped to another buyer or brought public via an IPO.

Fortunately, another good quality, reasonably priced multivitamin brand can be found with some searching: Puritan’s Pride Mega Vita Min, sold direct to consumers at the Puritan’s Pride website. With a few minor exceptions, (sodium selenate), the brand uses organic/chelated formulations for its minerals. While this multivitamin does not contain digestive enzymes or a vegetable powder blend, these omissions occur in such minor quantities as to be insignificant for the average individual on a reasonably healthy diet. If desired, a more complete array of digestive enzymes can be purchased separately, (e.g. Source Naturals), at a far lower cost per unit quantity than RL offers in its multivitamin. Mega Vita Min also does not contain probiotics. However, most research studies largely dismiss any health benefits from them, endorsing pre-biotics, (e.g. NOW Foods Inulin), instead. One must take two tablets of Puritan’s Mega Vita Min to get the equivalent RDA percentages of a single RL tablet. Unlike RL’s, though, Puritan’s tablets offer the advantage of being time release, thereby improving overall absorption. (As some reviewers have noted, RL’s B-vitamins are quickly excreted in one’s urine with little health benefit, a consequence of its rapid release formulation.) Adjusting for RDA percentages, Puritan’s two-a-day Mega Vita Min at ~$23/300 tablets costs about the same as RL Men’s One 150 tablet one-a-day multivitamin prior to RL’s late 2016 70% price hike. Orders with Puritan’s Pride over $49 ship free — and without tax for customer’s living outside New York. Please note that Puritan’s Pride offers a Mega Vita Min in a RED bottle that lacks the 100%+ RDA levels of the Mega Vita Min multivitamins in the YELLOW or BROWN bottles.

NOTE: I do NOT have any financial or other relationship with Puritan’s Pride or its publicly traded owner, NBTY. My recommendation is strictly unsolicited and uncompensated.

Good Product; Bad Price Increase, March 19, 2017

This is indeed a high-quality product, but increasing your product by 60% in price for the same quantity is far too much for a multi-vitamin that doesn’t have any incredibly high concentration and doesn’t even last half of the year (if taken daily). As someone who has been buying this product loyally for the past few years, I cannot recommend this at this price point.
